MacBook on Rent: Which Air or Pro Should Your Team Choose?

Four questions decide which MacBook your team should rent: how heavy the work is, how many screens each desk has, how much memory the apps use, and whether you can commit to a 1-year lock-in. Here is how the range compares.

For most companies, choosing a MacBook comes down to four questions: how heavy is the work, how many screens does each desk have, how much memory do your apps use, and can you commit for a year. The chip generation matters less than launch-day headlines suggest. This guide compares the MacBooks in our catalogue for businesses across Delhi NCR and beyond, from a consultancy on Golf Course Road whose team lives in Keynote and Zoom to a production house in Noida Film City cutting 4K projects against deadlines. Every MacBook is rented on a monthly plan.

The lock-in question comes first

Before comparing chips, decide how long you need the Macs. The MacBook Air M2 and later, and most newer MacBook Pros, need a 1-year lock-in. Older models run month to month with a one-month minimum: the MacBook Air M1, the MacBook Pro 13-inch and 14-inch M1, the MacBook Pro 16-inch M1 Pro and the MacBook Pro M3 Pro. For a three-month client engagement, pick from the month-to-month list. For a stable design or product team, the newer chips on a 1-year term are a sound choice.

MacBook Air M1: the sensible default for light work

The MacBook Air M1 is still quick for the work most people actually do: documents, spreadsheets, browsing, email and video calls. It has no fan, so it is silent, and its battery comfortably lasts a working day of ordinary use. Because it runs month to month, it is the natural pick for short projects, interns, operations and sales staff, and as a stand-in while a company-owned Mac is at the service centre. The 16 GB version is worth the small step up for heavier multitasking.

Its limits are worth knowing. The 720p webcam looks soft next to newer models on client calls, it supports only one external display, and it charges through one of its two USB-C ports.

MacBook Air M2: better screen, camera and charging

The MacBook Air M2 brought the redesign: a larger, brighter 13.6-inch display, a 1080p camera that makes a visible difference on video calls, and MagSafe charging that keeps both USB-C ports free. In day-to-day work the chip is a modest step up from M1. Like the M1, it drives one external display. It carries a 1-year lock-in, so choose it for a team that will be in place for the year.

MacBook Air M3 and M4: the Airs for desk setups

The MacBook Air M3 looks the same as the M2, and for many renters the deciding difference is simple: with the lid closed, it can drive two external displays. If a desk in a Cyber City tower or a Noida Sector 62 office has a pair of monitors, this Air uses both. It also adds faster Wi-Fi 6E. The M4 Air goes further, driving two external displays with the lid open, and comes with 16 GB of memory as standard in our catalogue, plus a sharper 12 MP camera for calls. Both are available with a 512 GB SSD for teams that keep large files locally.

MacBook Pro: when the work is sustained

The difference between an Air and a Pro is not only speed. It is stamina. A MacBook Pro has fans, so it holds its performance through a 40-minute export, a long code build or a batch of RAW photos, where a fanless Air gradually slows down. The Pro models also bring an HDMI port and an SD card slot, so you can plug into a conference-room screen at an Aerocity hotel without a dongle, and photographers can offload a shoot straight from the camera card.

  • MacBook Pro 13-inch and 14-inch M1: month to month, good value for developers and analysts on a project of uncertain length.
  • MacBook Pro 16-inch M1 Pro and MacBook Pro M3 Pro: serious editing and development power with no 1-year commitment, which makes them popular for agency projects.
  • MacBook Pro M3, M4 and M5: newer chips for steady teams, on a 1-year lock-in.
  • MacBook Pro 14-inch M4 Pro, 16-inch M4 Pro and 14-inch M5 Pro: 24 GB of memory for professional video, large photo libraries, long renders and heavy builds, on a 1-year lock-in.
  • MacBook Pro 16-inch M2 Pro and M4 Pro: a 16.2-inch canvas for timelines and colour panels, better suited to a studio desk in Okhla than a daily Metro commute.

Memory matters more than the chip

On Apple silicon, memory is shared between the processor and graphics and cannot be upgraded later, so choose it deliberately:

  • 8 GB handles documents, browsing, video calls and light photo editing.
  • 16 GB suits heavy multitasking, development with Docker or virtual machines, and larger design files.
  • 24 GB, as on the M4 Pro and M5 Pro, suits professional video, large photo libraries and long renders.

An older chip with more memory often feels faster in a heavy working day than a newer chip with less, because the Mac spends less time swapping data to storage. A 16 GB MacBook Air M1 on a month-to-month plan can be a smarter buy than an 8 GB M2 on a 1-year lock-in.

Need a desktop Mac instead?

For fixed desks such as a design studio or a reception, the Mac mini M4 with a 24-inch monitor runs month to month and costs less than most MacBook Pros.

Before you choose a Mac at all

  • Check for Windows-only software. TallyPrime, several CAD and engineering tools, and some corporate VPN or assessment apps need Windows. Apple silicon Macs do not support Boot Camp.
  • Plan your adapters. The Airs have only USB-C ports. Ask for an adapter if you will present on a projector or use USB-A drives.
  • Apple Accounts and Activation Lock. Before return, each user signs out so Find My and Activation Lock are off. A Mac still locked to an account cannot be reset, and the rental cannot be closed until the lock is removed.
  • Company devices. If your IT team enrols the Mac in device management, they need to remove it before return.

Renting Macs for a team

Rent is billed monthly, and rates drop as quantity rises. Anything shorter than a month, such as a launch event or a two-day workshop, is an event order quoted on request. Business KYC is done online before dispatch: a GST certificate or incorporation documents, the authorised signatory's ID and the delivery contact's details. Cancelling the order or refusing delivery after it is placed attracts one month's rent as a penalty, so confirm numbers first. A failed Mac is replaced within 24 hours in NCR; teams in Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad or Pune receive Macs shipped from NCR in 3–4 days, and replacements there take as long, so a spare is worth holding for larger teams.

Quick picks

  • Short project, light work: MacBook Air M1, month to month.
  • Two monitors on the desk, stable team: MacBook Air M3 or M4.
  • Heavy editing without a year's commitment: MacBook Pro M3 Pro or 16-inch M1 Pro.
  • Heavy editing for a year or more: MacBook Pro 14-inch M4 Pro or M5 Pro.

FAQs

Is the MacBook Air M1 still good enough to rent?

For documents, spreadsheets, browsing, video calls and light photo editing, yes. It is silent, has long battery life and runs month to month, so it suits short projects. Its weak points are a 720p webcam and support for only one external display. If a user is on client video calls all day or needs two monitors, step up to an M3 or M4 Air.

Which MacBooks can we rent without a 1-year lock-in?

The MacBook Air M1, the MacBook Pro 13-inch and 14-inch M1, the MacBook Pro 16-inch M1 Pro and the MacBook Pro M3 Pro run month to month with a one-month minimum. The MacBook Air M2 and later, and most newer MacBook Pros including the M3, M4, M4 Pro, M5 and M5 Pro models, need a 1-year lock-in.

Can I run Windows software on a rented MacBook?

Not directly. Apple silicon Macs do not support Boot Camp, so Windows can only run inside virtualisation software such as Parallels Desktop, which needs its own licence, and not every Windows program works that way. If the work depends on TallyPrime, Windows-only CAD tools or a Windows-only corporate app, rent a Windows laptop instead.
